In the School of Education, Social Work and Psychological Sciences, working with and for our community is at the heart of everything we do.
Institute for Urban Education
More than 75% of students at the Institute of Urban Development (IUE) identify as future teachers of color and more than 90% of IUE graduates reach their five-year mark in the field of education.
UMKC PLUS
Our UMKC Pathways to Leadership in Urban Schools (UMKC PLUS) program includes 12 professional development sessions to aspiring and practicing school leaders, generating an annual pipeline of 8-12 leaders to the local school districts.
Community Counseling and Assessment Services
Every year, we serve more than 300 clients, facilitate more than 3,000 client sessions and train 45-55 counselors and psychologists.
Berkley Child and Family Development Center
We support teacher preparation while acting as a model to the community for state-of-the-art early childhood care and education and a resource to the greater Kansas City area.
Regional Professional Development Center
With our 37 district partners across four counties, we offer hundreds of teacher and administrative professional development sessions on 13 content areas.

Our relationships with schools and organizations across Kansas City promote cultures of collaboration, inclusion and academic excellence and our services help fulfill the essential needs in our region.
How We Connect
Edgar L. and Rheta A. Berkley Child and Family Development Center
This state-of-the-art program serves as a learning laboratory for early childhood students. The center enrolls children of UMKC faculty, staff and students, as well as children from the Greater Kansas City community.
Community Counseling and Assessment Services
Available to both the UMKC and external communities, we offer an array of psychological and educational resources at an affordable cost. Services include counseling for individuals and groups, assessment of learning and mood disorders, assistance for refugees and immigrants, and more.
Institute for Urban Education
The first undergraduate program of its kind in the United States, IUE prepares teachers for success in urban classrooms by introducing issues of social justice and multicultural learning.
UMKC PLUS
UMKC PLUS is a two-year principal certification and master’s degree program for talented educators who want to become transformational school leaders.
Regional Professional Development Center
This consulting team at the Regional Professional Development Center (RPDC) supports PK-12 teachers and administrators in addressing some of the most challenging issues in education. The center provides resources on leadership, special education, English language learning, behavior support and more.
