This program is designed for students who want to become certified to teach young learners from birth through age eight (third grade). The program helps students discover the kind of teacher they want to be through a carefully scaffolded learning process that prepares them to atively engage with children, their families and communities through meaningful and culturally responsive learning experiences.
Students complete their field experiences with district, charter and early learning center partners from across the Kansas City metropolitan area to graduate with a year’s worth of teaching experience.
Our graduates are prepared to work in early learning centers and in public, private and charter schools.
Visit the Academic Catalog for full program details, including course listings.

The Institute of Urban Education (IUE) prepares new teachers for success in urban classrooms by exploring issues of social justice and multicultural education. The IUE scholarship is given in exchange for teaching in a Kansas City-area partner district for at least four years after graduation.
UMKC offers automatic scholarships to eligible undergraduate students. In addition, all students may apply for competitive scholarships.
