The special education program is designed for those who want to be certified to teach students with mild-to-moderate, cross-categorical disabilities. Students complete their field experiences with district, charter and early learning center partners from across the Kansas City metropolitan area, gaining a year's worth of experience, and actively engage with students and their families and communities through meaningful and culturally responsive learning experiences.
Our graduates work as K-12 teachers in public, private and charter schools.
Visit the Academic Catalog for full program details, including course listings.
Undergraduate students can sign up for a free TEACH Kansas City account to receive access to tools and resources, such as teacher certification guides, application checklists, scholarships and application fee reimbursement.
The Institute of Urban Education (IUE) prepares new teachers for success in urban classrooms by exploring issues of social justice and multicultural education. The IUE scholarship is given in exchange for teaching in a Kansas City-area partner district for at least four years after graduation.
UMKC offers automatic scholarships to eligible undergraduate students. In addition, all students may apply for competitive scholarships.
