UMKC Pathways to Leadership in Urban Schools (UMKC PLUS) is a two-year, practice-based principal certification residency and graduate degree program that helps talented educators become capable school leaders.

Benefits of the Program

Hands-on Practice

In summer institute and then during the school year, get real experience helping a team of teachers improve their instruction, with support from a leadership coach. During the school year, our residents receive a full salary and benefits from the schools where they work.

Personalized Coaching and Training

In bi-weekly coaching visits, your leadership coach will help you work toward personal leadership goals and build a deep understanding of your school and the surrounding community. We’ll also work with you to tailor a coaching and development plan  including monthly professional development sessions that fit your leadership experience and the context of the school where you work.

Support From a Mentor Principal

We partner with Kansas City schools to provide their residents with the best possible training and support. As part of this commitment, mentor principals in our schools will receive training on how to best support your development as a leader and, more broadly, foster a strong culture of leadership development.

Principal Certification and a Graduate Degree

Demonstrate success with your teachers and students, complete coursework, and pass required exams to earn principal certification and a Master of Arts or Educational Specialist in Educational Administration at the end of the second year.

A Community of Leaders

Tap into a diverse network of fellow PLUS residents who will challenge you to grow and support you.

KC PLUS is a great program that is challenging and supportive to all residents. Residents will be fully prepared to be educational leaders in urban schools and ready to confront and address educational inequality.
